Kaavi KavithE
May 2025
Nestled in Koteshwara, Kundapura, this 4 BHK residence is an interpretation of coastal Karnataka's vernacular architecture for a family of three and their kitten. Borrowing elements from their lineage and culture, kaavi Kavithe stands as a beautiful amalgamation of memory, context and space. Rooted in the region's climatic and cultural context, the home features deep overhangs, permeable timber screens, and carefully positioned fenestrations that moderate harsh sunlight while maximizing daylight and ventilation.
The home comprises of a rich material palette of stained jackfruit wood, red and black oxide flooring, kota stone and laterite creating an expression of regional materials. Traditional Kaavi art is reimagined throughout the home; as framed artwork, doorway borders, and intricate ceiling details that celebrate the family’s Mangalorean heritage and the region’s skilled artisans. Each corner of the home speaks a vernacular language that is deeply rooted in the family’s heritage and ancestry.
